Hungry For A Taste of the
Tropics?
“Looking for something different from the regular fish and chips? You’ll find fish and chips on our menu, but they may not be what you’re expecting! We’re dishing up delicious food from the island nation of Jamaica and things are really heating up in our kitchen.
Jamaican cooking features a wide variety of seafood as well as many tropical fruits commonly available around the island. Some of the popular Jamaican dishes we have on offer include curry goat, fried dumplings and ackee with fried plantain (that’s the fish and chips bit even if you don’t recognize it).
One of the most well known and popular forms of seasoning that we use is the ever popular jerk seasoning. Jerk is made up of various herbs and spices, while the term jerking means using this seasoning on a variety of meats, then cooking them slowly on medium heat. Jamaican menus today feature the ‘jerk’ method of cooking on a wide variety of meats including pork, chicken and others.
A wide variety of cultures have all influenced Jamaican cooking over time. Starting with the first Spanish to arrive on the island, Jamaican cooking has been influenced by a wide range of cultures as citizens of nations from such far away places as Africa began to trickle across our little Island. The European powers governing Jamaica brought slavery along with them so African, Chinese and East Indian cooking styles began to influence Jamaican cooking. British colonialism also played a role in Jamaican cooking as people traveled the Commonwealth in search of adventure and a warm place to live.”
